Watch A Land Rover Defender Tow A 44-Ton Truck Out Of Trouble

If you need the perfect demonstration of the new Defender’s capability, here it is.

The new Land Rover Defender is one of the most capable off-roaders you can buy right now, offering impressive approach and departure angles of 38 and 40 degrees respectively and generous ground clearance. As we’ve seen in behind the scenes footage from the upcoming James Bond movie ‘No Time to Die,’ Land Rover’s new off-roader can take some serious punishment. With a maximum towing capacity of 8,201 pounds, the new Defender is also an ideal vehicle for towing large vehicles out of trouble, as this video perfectly demonstrates.

In Strafford, England, a transporter fully loaded with new Discoverys, Discovery Sports, Range Rover Sports, Range Rover Evoques, and Range Rover Velars worth a total of around £500,000 ($682,000) was making a delivery to the Stafford Land Rover dealership on icy roads.

Just a few feet away from the dealership, the transporter got stuck in the treacherous conditions. Witnessing the delivery driver’s ordeal, the dealer’s sales manager, Matt Knowles, hopped into his personal Defender and set off to rescue the stranded transporter.

Combined with the seven loaded SUVs, the transporter weighed 44 tons, but this proved to be no problem for the rugged Defender. After hooking the transporter to the SUV with a tow rope, the Defender initially struggles to move the massive transporter. But after around a minute of persistence, the off-roader successfully tows the transporter out of trouble and pulls it safely to its destination.

Incredibly, this meant the Defender was able to tow 19 times its own weight.

If you need proof the new Defender is Land Rover’s strongest and most capable off-roader yet, here it is. The Defender used in the video was a 110 model, which is powered by either a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generating 296 hp and 295 lb-ft or a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo with mild-hybrid technology producing 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. A more affordable Defender 90 will also go on sale this spring.

With videos like this demonstrating the Defender’s tremendous capability, it’s no surprise the new off-roader has already outsold the old model in America.

Land Rover Defender 110 Masterfully Restored

Just look at it.

America is absolutely obsessed with Land Rovers, whether it be the ultra-luxurious Range Rover or the rough and ready Defender. The new Defender has been outselling the old model by a large margin, but Americans still have a soft spot for the original car, which is fetching insane prices, especially when restored and modified. Osprey Custom Cars is one builder that specializes in these cars with previous creations including a 600-horsepower supercharged Defender, and a 1986 Defender that is more luxurious than most BMWs. The company has now revealed its latest build, and it could possibly be the best one yet.

This custom Defender 110 has undergone a complete ground-up build, including a complete exterior and interior makeover, and even an engine swap. On the outside, this Landy is painted Keswick Green with a Santorini black roof, and features black anodized aluminum billet hinges on the doors, hood, fire and ice side steps, front and rear LED lights, and a tough-looking KBX front grille with black intake vents.

The redone body rolls on a brand new chassis with stock suspension, upgraded rebuilt axles with front and back disc brakes, and 20-inch Kahn rims wrapped in all-terrain tires.

Under the hood sits a 5.3-liter LS V8 engine that sends 325 hp to the wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

Moving to the interior, this 110 now feels like a premium SUV from any of the major German manufacturers, and features a TDCI ‘Puma” style dashboard, aluminum door trimming, black Autobiography seating with front heated seats, and even an Alcantara headliner. Creature comforts include front and rear air conditioning, cruise control, and a custom center console with phone charging ports. The infotainment system is an Alpine double din stereo with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay integration and JL speakers. The car has received further refinements in the form of heavy duty sound deadening material for a quiet ride.

Not only is this Land Rover Defender 110 classy, but its supremely capable off road. The perfect combination.

Supercharged 1993 Land Rover Defender Has A 600-HP Heart

It’ll make new Defender drivers envious.

From the outside, it looks like a pristine yet clearly older version of the Land Rover, but the SUV you see here is so much more than that. Some of our favorite restomods and custom cars are those which combine classic looks with modern underpinnings, and that’s exactly what Osprey Custom Cars have done with this 1993 Land Rover Defender 110. Osprey previously shoved a Corvette engine into a restored Defender 110, and the white example here also gets a notable power boost of its own.

Under the hood is a supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V8 with around 600 horsepower and 580 lb-ft of torque. The V8 is paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox. The modifications beneath the skin didn’t end there, of course, as the Landy also boasts a heavy-duty transfer case, heavy-duty front/rear axles, and a galvanized chassis that has been powder-coated in gloss black. Along with MD Terra Firma springs and four-wheel power disc brakes, this Defender is ready to perform both on- and off-road. We wouldn’t want to risk scratching that paintwork, though.

Finished in Land Rover Alaskan White contrasted with a hood and roof in Stornoway Gray, it has a charmingly retro aura about it that can’t be matched by the brand new Defender. It’s just as appealing as Osprey’s 1986 Defender. The Cooper tires are wrapped around 18-inch Sterling rims in a two-tone black/silver combination.

Inside, there is far more luxury on offer than you would have gotten in an original 1993 Defender. There are classy Charcoal leather seats, with both front chairs being heated, along with an Alcantara headliner in the same color.

A seven-inch touchscreen interface brings this Landy in line with other modern SUVs, as does the wireless charging pad and dual USB charging ports. All of that isn’t even an exhaustive list of all the extras that this Defender comes with.

“This truck looks great at the country club or off-road,” said Aaron Richardet, the founder and managing director of Osprey. “It will surprise a lot [of] sports car drivers from a stoplight.”

It’ll surprise your financial manager, too, because this epic Defender’s asking price is $229,950. You could buy more than four brand new Defenders for that price. Then again, there’s nothing else out there quite like Osprey’s creation.

Land Rover Defender Upgraded With 650-HP Camaro ZL1 Engine

0-62 mph in this custom off-roader takes just 5.9 seconds.

Florida-based ECD Automotive Design produces some of the best handcrafted Land Rover Defender rebuilds on the market. Back in the summer, the US specialist teamed up with Electric Classic Cars to build the first Tesla-powered Land Rover in the world. Now, ECD has unveiled its latest Defender project, boasting unique styling and higher performance.

Dubbed Project Langeti, the custom Land Rover Defender is finished in utilitarian Keswick Green with Nara Bronze accents. This camo coloring makes the custom off-roader look far more rugged than the new Land Rover Defender. Its performance is also on another level.

Under the hood, you’ll find a supercharged LT4 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission – the same engine that powers the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 producing 650 horsepower and 630 lb-ft of torque. This enables the custom off-roader to accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 5.9 seconds, giving the Defender sports car levels of performance. Upgraded Brembo brakes with custom Nara Bronze calipers also provide more substantial stopping power for the high-performance off-roader.

Other modifications include air ride suspension and 18-inch wheels also finished in Nara Bronze for a smoother ride. A Nara Bronze roof, rear ladder, and a sport exhaust system with black dual exhaust tips add to the utilitarian theme.

A Kahn Design bumper, classic swing away wheel carrier, and mesh grille finished in Nara Bronze help Project Langeti stand out in the crowded Defender restomod scene. “Every detail has been considered on this build. Langeti is a truly stunning example of the new ECD Signature build range and I believe one of the best Defenders available worldwide,” said the company’s co-founder Tom Humble.

Inside, the interior matches the exterior color theme with chocolate brown leather applied to the front Recaro Orthoped seats and throughout the cabin. Retro touches such as the simple stitch design, and wood-rim steering wheel combine with modern upgrades such as a new sound system, back-up camera, blind-spot assistance, keyless entry, and power locks and windows.

Land Rover To Introduce “Baby” Defender Model

Why not capitalize on a cool nameplate?

The new 2021 Land Rover Defender is a long-awaited return of an iconic vehicle. The Defender’s launch was anything but smooth due to the global pandemic, but the new SUV is now arriving at dealerships, while Land Rover is making a major recovery. Now that the Defender is back, it seems hard to believe that Land Rover won’t take advantage of the model’s name recognition to build a second variant.

Much like the new Ford Bronco, which arrived alongside a more affordable and mainstream Bronco Sport model, Land Rover won’t be content to offer just one Defender model. In a report about upcoming Jaguar and Land Rover products, WhatCar reports that a smaller, “baby” Defender model will arrive in 2022.

This is not the first time we’ve heard a rumor about the expansion of the Defender lineup. The Defender could grow to become its own sub-brand within Land Rover, much like the Range Rover lineup. This expansion would begin with a more compact model with less space, less equipment, and a smaller engine. That engine would likely be a new 1.5-liter three-cylinder (the same one in the new Evoque plug-in hybrid), sending power to the front wheels. All-wheel-drive versions would also be available as well as hybrid and plug-in hybrid models.

The report claims this new model will receive a new name that Land Rover hasn’t used before. If we had to guess, Land Rover would follow up on the Range Rover Sport and Discovery Sport naming scheme, calling this new model the Defender Sport.

Before the Defender Sport arrives, Land Rover will reveal an all-new Range Rover next year with a brand-new platform. The Range Rover will offer multiple engines and plug-in hybrid options, possibly even an electric version. Later in 2021, the smaller Range Rover Sport will arrive, followed by the rumored all-electric Road Rover in 2022.
