Classic Land Rover Series IIA Converted Into Luxury Electric Off-Roader

Everrati’s latest creation combines old-school styling and off-road capability with a modern electric powertrain.

For the first time in its model history, the Mercedes G-Class is going electric. Mercedes previewed the upcoming electric off-roader at the 2021 Munich Motor Show with the EQG concept. As Land Rover aims to become an all-electric manufacturer by the end of the decade, it’s only a matter of time before Land Rover responds with an electric version of the Defender.

However, the UK’s Everrati Automotive has already beaten Land Rover to it, though this electric off-roader is not based on the all-new Defender. After electrifying a 964 Porsche 911 and Mercedes SL, Everrati has built an all-electric version of the legendary Land Rover Series IIA, giving the off-roader a new lease of life.

Debuting at the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace last weekend, the electric Land Rover is powered by an 60-kWh battery pack and an electric motor producing 150 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. On a single charge, the electric Defender offers up to 125 miles of pure electric range. Before being transformed into an electric off-roader, the original Series IIA is stripped out and the body and chassis is meticulously restored, galvanized and coated in a protective zinc to prevent corrosion.

With two and four-wheel-drive modes and hi and lo ranges for improved traction, the Series IIA has lost none of its renowned capability in its transition to an EV. Power steering and upgraded brakes help modernize the Defender Series IIA, which ended production in 1971, for the 21st century.

Inside, the interior is upgraded with heated front seats and a rear bench trimmed in high-quality Bridge of Weir leather finished in Chestnut Automotive Nappa. Heated lap belts are also available.

“With the unveiling of an electric version of the legendary Land Rover Series IIA, we are continuing to deliver on Everrati’s mission, which is to craft cutting-edge, capable, highly desirable, and sustainable cars, each with the soul of an icon,” founder and chief executive of Everrati Automotive Limited Justin Lunny said in a statement. “To do so requires unparalleled attention to detail and technical proficiency, with one eye on ensuring our iconic cars meet 21st-century demands, and the other on safeguarding a vehicle’s original character and DNA – both dynamically and aesthetically.”

Osprey brings back the Land Rover Defender 90 Soft Top

The Defender you see here is nearly a quarter of a century old, but Osprey Custom Cars made sure it looks and handles like new.

This short-wheelbase, three-door SUV is the first finished restomod out of a planned batch of three. It utilizes a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 engine to propel itself forward with 441 PS (435 hp / 324 kW) and 603 Nm (450 lb-ft) of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission with a transfer case and an inter-axle diff lock sends the momentum to both axles.

urther technical highlights include aftermarket cylinder heads, a performance exhaust system, active powertrain cooling, and stainless-steel fuel lines. Both axles and cardan shafts have been replaced with heavy-duty counterparts, and the same applies to the brakes.

On the outside, the Defender sports new bodywork, doors, radiator grille, and the soft top mentioned above. Black wheels shod in mud tires fill out the arches.

Rounding things off is a leather cabin housing an up-to-date infotainment system, a center console, wireless phone charging pads, and a start/stop button, among other niceties.

Manhart Gives Land Rover Defender 500-HP Of Attitude

This particular Defender prefers tarmac to gravel.

It’s safe to say that the all-new Land Rover Defender is a success. The British marque has battled to keep up with strong demand for the SUV, which has proved itself to be a superb off-roader. But there is a group of buyers who will also buy the Defender for its appearance and image, not necessarily to go hunting down Jeeps in the wild. For them, Manhart has just revealed its new Defender DP 500. The German tuner has gained prominence for making some already great sports cars even better than the stock model, so it’s no surprise that the DP 500 is a Defender with upgrades aimed at making it even better on-road, but maybe not as good off-tarmac.

As a starting point, Manhart used a Defender 110 P400. The stock P400 power plant is a 3.0-liter six-cylinder with turbocharging and a mild hybrid system that already produces a strong 395 horsepower (Manhart quotes the slightly higher 400 cv figure) and 406 lb-ft of torque. Naturally, Manhart thought that wasn’t quite brawny enough and increased outputs to 505 mechanical horsepower and 524 lb-ft with an engine control software remap, making it nearly as powerful as the new Defender V8. Manhart will also offer the option of lowering the suspension by 30 mm (about 1.2 inches) and a special stainless steel exhaust system with carbon or ceramic-coated tailpipes is said to be on the way.

Added performance aside, Manhart’s DP 500 looks as aggressive as any BMW M or Mercedes-AMG SUV. It rides on enormous 24-inch Manhart Forged Line wheels although smaller 22-inch wheels for off-road use are also available – we imagine without the suspension drop. This Defender also gets wing flares and silver stripes which contrast nicely with black paint. The cabin is highlighted by a mix of leather/Alcantara with various accent choices and Manhart ErgoMed front seats from Recaro. The tuner’s product page didn’t list an overall price for all these upgrades although the ECU software mapping does cost €2,973 ($3,550 at current rates) and the lowered, optimized air suspension costs €499 ($596).

These Guys Will Build Your Dream Land Rover Defender

This is something special.

The Land Rover Defender has evolved from an all-conquering off-roader into a more sophisticated luxury product, and it’s new price matches its spiff. However, that unattractive sticker price has helped Land Rover turn its fortunes around. As the traditionally utilitarian vehicle has morphed into a designer accessory, it has now grabbed the attention of the well-heeled. Sure, there are some who will turn the Defender into a more capable vehicle that can do what it was originally intended for, but the real money lies in bespoke customization. That’s something that Heritage Customs, co-founded by Niels van Roij, is particularly adept at. And the options are endless.

[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”41″ display=”basic_imagebrowser”]

Designer Niels van Roij says that nothing is off-limits, and that any theme can be applied to the vehicle, even if it means a vehicle “symbolizing a Caribbean island.” As the above video explains quite well, the Heritage Customs process sets up clients with a custom build that suits their exact tastes. Heritage can also source an older Defender if you don’t already own the vehicle you want to enhance.

Once the vehicle is obtained, you can choose from numerous custom touches. As these photos show, Heritage is fantastic at fitting aftermarket body parts that look as good as the originals. And with multiple wheel and fascia upgrades available for various Defender models, making the exterior stand out from the crowd can be easily achieved.

[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”42″ display=”basic_imagebrowser”]

Even the paint can be of a totally unique shade that you can help co-develop with Heritage, while the cabin opens up a vast range of possibilities when it comes to materials. Different types of leather, denim, wool, or tweed can be used to trim your interior, and the cargo area can be finished in teak wood. Little details can be customized too, from fender vents and treadplates to copper accents. Once the Defender is complete, Heritage Customs tests it on a variety of surfaces to ensure quality. There’s no word on what the average build costs, but with so many options, it shouldn’t be difficult to imagine someone spending six figures designing their dream Defender.

Kahn’s 2015 Land Rover Defender Pickup Looks Ready For The End Of Days

Kahn will soon proceed to modify the new Land Rover Defender, but in the meantime, they have tuned yet another previous-gen example and named it the End Edition.

A fine piece of automotive work, the pickup bears the British tuner’s signature design, with bolt-on fender extensions, new stainless steel front bumper with integrated lights, tweaked bonnet, tubular side steps for improved ingress and egress, side vents, roof lights, rear mud flaps and spare wheel cover in the open bed.

The Mondial Retro 20-inch wheels, shod in Cooper AT/3 tires, and twin crosshair exhausts with 100 mm (4 in) tailpipes round out the exterior changes. This six-year old Defender also features an upgraded interior. The front GTB bucket seats with heating, rear seats, parts of the dashboard and 3-spoke steering wheel, with billet brushed satin aluminum, are wrapped in brown quilted and perforated leather. It also features machined aluminum vented pedals, chunky rubber floor mats, rear boot mat, custom interior badge and boot sill plate.

While we’ve gotten used to seeing older Defenders with big GM engines, this one has a 2.2-liter diesel with 122 brake horsepower, coupled to a manual transmission. It has 27,000 miles (43,452 km) on the clock, two previous owners and was built in 2015, and it is for sale, with Kahn listing it with a buy-it-now price of £64,999 ($91,246). It’s also in right-hand drive, and if you want to check out the ad, you may do so here
